The parcel you sent arrived this morning and you may be sure I was glad to get it. Peggy sent a swell fruit cake and my it was good. Thursday and Friday we had a couple of drill in the morning and a march in the afternoon.ġ I found Margaret's cake waiting for me and two letters, one from Verna and one from Bessie when I got back. We had bathing parade in the ocean at 5 a.m. We were inspected by a bunch of high officers and it took all day. Wednesday we had a mobilization and every man in the camp had to appear in marching order ready to move away. Let me know when my assigned pay reaches you. We got £4 this time which is more than we should get. Tuesday I had 2 hours foot drill in the morning and got paid in the afternoon. Monday I shoveled coal all day and it was a dirty job. The town is hilly and Dover Castle stands on one of the cliffs but I did not go to see it as I have been fed up with that sort of stuff.ġ Expect to go to London again then week end andġ Greece is expected to come into the war almost any day now.ġ I am a spare gunman now and so am apt to do anything. The Channel Fleet had just returned from chasing those German destroyers who tried to raid the Channel two days before. It has a great harbour and there were lots of battleships, destroyers, hospital ships, subs etc. If any body wants to send anything, candy, eats, cigarettes etc would be far more acceptable.ġ Dover is an interesting place but the chief thing we saw was the waterfront. Everything is done by the trumpet call and an old Ontarioġ Don't send any more socks over until further notice as I won't need them. The gunners go down to the stables about half an hour after reveille half an hour at noon and at four in the afternoon. I have cleaned a horse several times and don't mind it at all. When all our horses come everybody will have a horse to feed clean and look after. That means more work but there are only half of them and the gunners help. Brought a book of these letter-cards and when I am extraordinarily busy will send one of them.ġ Did I tell you in my last letter that part of our horses were here. You remember seeing in the account of the battle in the paperġ Dearie mine my letters are liable to be irregular from now on, but will do my best to write you daily. If it had not been for that the whole German fleet would have been wiped out. In the Jutland battle, there was a fog so thick that you could not see your hand in front of you. We passed by the Royal Naval Aerial Depot where the areoplanes and airships that are alwaysġ Coming down from Glasgow to London, there were three sailors in our compartment who have been in all the naval battles of the war and they were telling us all their experiences. We took a motor-bus and the road was along the chalk cliffs overlooking the sea part of the time and was very pretty. I have kissed them all darling and I want them to carry my thoughts andġ Colbeck and I went over to Dover last Sunday.

Outside of the army you get some brown stuff for sugar and margarine instead of butter.ġ But I cannot do these nice things and must find a suitable substitute. I too am lonesome dearie, oh so lonesome ġ Bread is 90¢ a loaf here and granulated sugar very dear. Will send some more in a couple of days.ġ Am so sorry you are so lonesome darling-mine. I did not take them all but have been in them all. There are twenty so hope they all arrive. They have all the nasty and disagreeableġ Am enclosing some snaps taken around here. They were all broken up, two or sometimes three going to a battery. It is too bad that it had to come over in drafts as it has raised enough men to fill two batteries.ġ All my love, regard affection and kisses sweet,ġ All the rest of the 67th draft are in France now except the dozen that are in this battery. I guess the 67th will have to be disbanded as there are only half a dozen or so left in it.
